Duncan Grant
Piper
Duncan started learning the great Highland Bagpipe at the age of 8, under the tutelage of his father, who had been a top competition player. With his potential immediately recognised, his father encouraged him to take to the competition platform very early, and he first started competing at the Highland Games aged 10.
He had a very successful career in the Junior competitions. Some highlights include winning the Piobaireachd competitions at the Skye Highland Gathering 3 times in a row, and also winning the March Strathspey and Reel competition at the Northern Meeting Competition in Inverness at the age of 17. He also achieved 3rd place in the Piobaireachd event at this competition, making him the overall winner that year in the toughest piping competition in the world.
Now playing in the Senior competitions he is working his way towards winning some of the top prizes in the piping world. He has played at many weddings, ceilidhs and other events, and he has also presented talks about the bagpipe, its cultural heritage, and the music theory behind Highland and other Celtic styles of music.
Having an added interest in all forms of music, he also composes classical and contemporary music for Television and Film. While at University he was a successful scratch hip-hop DJ, and competed in many turntablist competitions. At the end of some of these events he would sometimes baffle his urban audience by finishing his set with a tune on the pipes!
